Selena Gomez reveals battle with Lupus on cover of Billboard Magazine
Selena Gomez is more than used to making headlines, usually it’s thanks to her controversial love life or racy semi-nude photo shoots. However, this time, her name is plastered on publication covers and trending on social media yet again, but for a very different reason.
In October 2015’s issue of Billboard Magazine, the 23-year-old actress and pop singer revealed the reason behind her recent career hiatus: a painful struggle with lupus, an autoimmune disease which attacks healthy organs in the body.
“I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke,” revealed the young starlet during the intimate interview featured on this month’s issue of the renown music magazine, in which she also discusses Taylor Swift, former flame Justin Bieber and her new album Revival.
The full story was published on Billboard.com and hit stands Thursday, October 9th, one day prior to Selena Gomez’s release of “Same Old Love”, the second single on Revival.
About her battle with Lupus Gomez said:
“I wanted so badly to say, ‘You guys have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy. You’re assholes,’ ” she says. “But I was angry I even felt the need to say that. It’s awful walking into a restaurant and having the whole room look at you, knowing what they’re saying. I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again.”
The “the heart wants what it wants” lamented having become a tabloid staple and expressed hurt feelings over sensationalist headlines published about her in late 2013 and early 2014, when magazine covers speculated about the time Gomez spent in Arizona rehab facility, the Meadows, saying “…it took away everything I loved about this business.”
At that time, shortly after the release of Stars Dance, Gomez suddenly canceled the last leg of her tour and made a statement about needing to spend time on herself.
Most media outlets interpreted the situation being experienced by the former Wizards of Waverly Place actress as being directly correlated to drug and alcohol abuse or assumed the star had fallen into a deep depression caused by her break up with long time boyfriend, Justin Bieber.

In the in-depth interview, Gomez also opens up about new film projects, moving out of her parents home, what her new roommates are like and why she loves Amy Shumer’s comedy so much. For now, her lupus is in remission, and Gomez says she’s relying on “diet, routine and medication” to stay healthy. She’s focused, motivated and rejoicing in all types of revivals taking place in different areas of her life.
