Netflix in the Works of Developing ‘Legend of Zelda’ Live-Action Series
Is it too good to be true? Can we really start fan-girling? Well, we just might be able to.
Netflix, the video streaming empire is in the early stages of developing a live action series based on “Zelda.”
In case you’ve been living under a rock, or you’ve never played a video game, “Zelda” is one of the video games most kids grew up playing.
Netflix is working side-by-side with Nintendo, the Japanese game developer that has made about 20 “The Legend of Zelda” games since the original, which was released in the U.S. in 1987.
The series will be about an ordinary boy named Link who must rescue princess Zelda and save their fantasy world called Hyrule. Netflix is still very early in the process and they have been actively seeking writers for their show. Netflix is describing it as “Game of Thrones” for a family audience, this person said.
The legendary “Zelda” games have traditionally included swords and sorcery, like “Game of Thrones” or “Lord of the Rings,” but typically with a more light-hearted tone.
Nintendo is not the easiest company to get on your side. Nintendo has been known for being very protective of their intellectual property and have allowed few adaptations over the years. With flops such as the animated “Legend of Zelda” series that ran for just one season in 1989 or the 1993 movie based on “Super Mario Bros,” can you really blame them for wanting to protect their property and characters?
They are still in the beginning stages of turning this idea into an amazing series and finding a writer is the most important task on their to-do list at the moment. It’s possible that Netflix or Nintendo will kill the project before it is even able to become something… we are hoping that the two partner together and move forward with the project to create something great for all Nintendo fans.
