There was so much controversy to Donovan’s retirement announcement because of Donovan’s cut from the World Cup team in May.  U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmanncontroversially cut Donovan, shocking U.S. fans everywhere leaving fans wondering why our team would be heading into the largest sporting event in the world without our best player. Donovan took a stab at Klinsmann earlier this month during the press conference announcing the player’s retirement. “I certainly wasn’t going to allow one person’s poor choice to impact a decision like this,” Donovan said.

In June, when Donovan was asked about the possibility of him returning to the national team under Klinsmann, he said: “That depends on a lot of conversations that would have to be held.”

Donovan, 32, is expected to play around 20 to 30 minutes in the game and will be honored by the federation for his contributions to U.S. soccer. He’s done so much for U.S. Soccer, it’s safe to say that he’s sealed his legacy!
