Texas high school student, Catarina Gutierrez, to perform at Latin Billboards
Catarina Gutierrez could easily be mistaken for an average 17-year-old, however, the Montwood High School Senior has a budding music career in the latin pop world and will soon perform her first two singles “Palpitar” and “Mirame” at The Latin Billboards Conference in Miami on April 28th, 2016.
Gutierrez, who is from El Paso, Texas has been working hard to make a name for herself in music industry circles in her hometown for some time now, performing in local coffee shops, lounges, and stadiums and working on the creation of original songs.

“I’m excited but nervous to perform at the Latin Billboards,” said Gutierrez in an interview with Press Pass Latino. “I’m preparing for my performance by working out and practicing the songs that I’ll be singing.”
Aside from performing two of her original songs, Gutierrez will be also perform “Come and Get It” by Selena Gomez at the Latin Billboards Conference.
The up and coming singer, who was born in Germany but hails from a Mexican-American family, says she knew from a young age that she wanted to sing and perform for others.
“I’ve been singing since I was three years old,” she said. “My musical inspirations growing up have been Selena and Whitney Houston but I also draw a lot from that feeling I get when I’m on stage.”
Even so, Catarina confesses that being a young latina in the competitive music industry isn’t easy. Similarly to her idol, Selena Quintanilla, Catarina feels it’s been harder for her to succeed because she’s not fluent in Spanish.
“Spanish isn’t my first language so I feel like that’s been a roadblock for me in the latin music industry,” she said.
“But I do feel like Selena paved the way for latina singers like me.”
Gutierrez is currently working with a vocal coach and has asked several family members to help her practice Spanish so she can improve her skills in the language, something she says is very important to her.
The young singer has been working with Texas-based record label Sound Stage Nine (SS9) but hasn’t signed an official contract. For now, she’s chosen to keep her options open and not limit herself in case a possibility with a larger label comes her way.
“In five years, I see myself performing on a larger scale, with albums already released and working on more music,” she said.
